Coming Soon - Fisheries Matter: Introduction to Fisheries and Development
In our increasingly globalized and interconnected world, millions still suffer from food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty and environmental degradation. Climate change is projected to cause a loss of agricultural production in many developing countries, where wildfish is a traditionally valued food source and an increasingly important protein staple and increasingly important source of nutrition. In times of economic or climactic hardship, fish remains a crucial nutrition source for the world's most vulnerable people. However, wild capture fisheries are becoming stressed and unsustainable as governance and management fail to keep up with demand.
Estimates state that 75 percent of the world's commercial fish stocks are being fished at or above sustainable yield; this is largely due to poor governance, inadequate management, perverse incentives and lack of environmental stewardship. Because of the great importance of wild capture fisheries to the world's food security and economy, this sector requires prompt and comprehensive attention from national governments, development agencies and their partners.
In recent years, Mission and Field Office increasingly have requested technical assistance with the design and development of fisheries projects that can be sustained long past their USAID-funded project life. USAID is taking the first steps towards fisheries reform by working with partner countries to move from open-access fisheries towards managed access. This course explains some types of managed access, including use/access rights, no-take fishery reserves, input and output controls and voluntary approaches.
This online course has been developed by the USAID Global FISH Alliance (G-FISH) Program to help development professionals better understand how to develop sustainable fisheries. The course is offered free on a non-academic credit basis.
