This course focuses on the quantitative methods side of a mixed methods toolkit. It focuses on when quantitative methods are most appropriate and how they are used. The course steps through the process of designing a quantitative survey, then implementing it in the field, and then analyzing and interpreting the data. The course also presents applications of quantitative methods in specific problem-solving contexts of Ethiopia.

This course will introduce students to the art of managing risk and disasters. After a full semester getting familiar with guiding philosophies, frameworks, key issues, important terminology, and a wealth of actors, this course aims to pull together all these concepts into the action of managing risk. The focus here is now less on the science and research side than on the concrete daily management of risk. Material will be compiled largely from the UNDP's Disaster Management training Programme (DMTP).
