This course will introduce students to the action of managing risk and disasters. Among the main management phases to be addressed are mitigation, preparedness, response & logistics, rehabilitation / reconstruction and recovery / early recovery. Other aspects also explored include camp management and working with the media. For each element, students explore the components and main actors engaging in the field. They learn about the nuts and bolts of managing an intervention in the phase and critiquing its advantages and disadvantages as compared to other interventions and/or other phases.
Students should be submitting practicum proposals and working on the 50hour practicum in this course.
A. Introduction to Research and Applied Mix Methods
The first part of this course (combining 632 and 634) introduces the intellectual foundations of the scientific method and the principles of applied research. Students acquire the necessary skills to identify a significant research question and to design a research project. The course presents the mixed methods approach to applied research and its appropriate application to specific research questions This course provides the basic elements of research, such as design and sampling, and develops skills in the essential data gathering sources: interviewing and observation. The module will cover a basic review of statistics over a 3 week period.
This course follows Course 632 for the first 8 weeks of the semester.
